Keyflip app icon

Plug in a keyboard. Type in its layout.

Keyflip is a small menu bar app for Mac. It switches to the right keyboard layout when a keyboard connects, and back to your default layout when it leaves.

Animated split-flap board showing the layout your Mac is typing in. It flips to U.S. when a NuPhy Air75 V2 connects, back to Spanish when it disconnects, then to German for a Keychron K2 and Dvorak for a Kinesis Advantage.

Why this exists. On a Spanish Mac keyboard, Ñ sits exactly where a U.S. keyboard has the semicolon. Plug a U.S. keyboard into a Mac set to Spanish and every ; you type comes out as ñ. Keyflip was built for that desk: a Spanish MacBook and a U.S. NuPhy Air75.

How it works

One morning at the desk.

  1. 09:02Step 1

You plug in the NuPhy. Your Mac switches to U.S.

Keyflip sees the keyboard connect, by cable, USB receiver or Bluetooth, and switches to the layout you gave it. Click the icon in the menu bar to see the current layout and what changed last.

  2. 09:03Step 2

Each keyboard gets its own layout. Switch automatically, or ask first.

Pick a layout for each keyboard, and a default layout for when none of them is connected. If you'd rather decide each time, choose "Ask first": Keyflip shows a notification with a Switch button and changes nothing until you press it.

    Later, when the Keychron connects:

  3. 13:15Step 3

You take the laptop to lunch. It's Spanish again.

When your saved keyboards disconnect, Keyflip goes back to your default layout, so the Ñ key on your MacBook types Ñ. A keyboard that drops out for a second and comes straight back doesn't count, so your layout doesn't flip back and forth.

Features

Everything it does fits on one card. Six cards, to be fair.

USB, 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth

However your keyboard connects, Keyflip notices.

Ask first, if you like

A notification with a Switch button, per keyboard. Nothing changes until you press it.

Back to your default

Disconnect and your Mac returns to your default layout, the one you type in on its own keyboard.

Ignores hiccups

A keyboard that drops out for a moment and reconnects doesn't flip your layout back and forth.

No special permissions

No Input Monitoring, no Accessibility. It never reads your keystrokes.

Native and quiet

A menu bar icon and one settings window, built with the system's own controls. Launches at login if you turn it on.

Privacy

Keyflip collects no data.

No accounts, no analytics, no network access. Your keyboards and layouts stay on your Mac. Keyflip runs in Apple's App Sandbox and is sold through the Mac App Store. Read the privacy policy.

FAQ

Good questions

Does it work with Bluetooth keyboards?

Yes, along with USB cables and 2.4 GHz receivers. A Bluetooth keyboard that reconnects after your Mac wakes from sleep counts as connecting again, so Keyflip switches to its layout again.

Which layouts can it switch to?

Any layout you've added to your Mac: U.S., Spanish, German, French, British, Dvorak, Colemak and so on. To add one, open System Settings › Keyboard › Text Input and click Edit. It then shows up in Keyflip.

Can I use several keyboards?

Yes. Each keyboard keeps its own layout and its own choice of "Switch automatically" or "Ask first". If more than one is connected, the one you connected most recently wins.

What permissions does it need?

No special ones: no Input Monitoring, no Accessibility. Keyflip only looks at which keyboards are connected, never at what you type. If you use "Ask first", macOS asks once whether Keyflip may show notifications.

Is it a subscription?

No. $2.99 (2,99 €), once, on the Mac App Store. No in-app purchases, no ads.
